Today, Representative Brian Clem, Representative Ben Cannon, and a host of additional House members introduced HB 3100, The Metolius Protection Act of 2009. This landmark legislation will provide the strongest protections to date to preserve this Oregon treasure from both current and future threats.

This historic legislation has three primary components:

1. Accept and modify LCDC’s recommendation to designate the Metolius Basin and area of interest as as an Area of Critical State Concern (“ACSC”).

2. Stipulate that destination resorts will not be located within this ACSC.

3. Direct LCDC to supplement its management plan in order to ensure that new development within the ACSC will not negatively impact the Metolius river, including its headsprings and tributaries. It also ensures that new development within the ACSC will not negatively impact fish and wildlife resources within the ACSC.

Of the 60 members of the Oregon House of Representatives, each of the 18 individuals below may well be the ONE PERSON who ends up determining the fate of the Metolius as we know it. The key individuals are both Republicans and Democrats, and each one needs to hear your voice right away!

These legislators may not be familiar with the Metolius, nor with its special meaning to thousands of Oregonians. They may not believe the issue is important to the people they represent. They may not realize the “ecoresort” proposal includes 450 residences within miles the Metolius Headwaters. They may not be thinking of the impact of their vote on your grandkids, and their grandkids. With literally hundreds of other bills on their minds, it is up to each of us to give them the information they need to represent us. Share your story about why saving the Metolius is important to you.

Write these 18 women and men. E-mail them. And contact your friends, family members, and other networks to urge them to do the same. The most effective contacts come from constituents, so if you know someone who lives in the towns following their names, ask that someone to contact their Representative in Salem, urging a yes vote on HB 3100.
