SB 30 Alert - June 5th: Senate Bill 30's Final Days?

Hello everyone,

As we head into what is supposed to to be the final month of the Oregon legislature's 2007 session, the battle over Senate Bill 30 will soon come to a close.

We know the House vote will be a tight one, but we feel good about our chances. The outpouring of support for the bill has been truly monumental and in addition to the hundreds upon hundreds of letters that you and others have submitted, numerous public interest groups have joined the cause. And while county and city officials in Madras have– predictably– expressed opposition to SB 30, the City of Sisters and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs have voiced their staunch support for the bill.

At present, SB 30 sits in the hands of a friendly committee (Elections, Ethics, and Rules), chaired by one of the bill's co-sponsors (Rep. Diane Rosenbaum). There will be a hearing, but it's possible that the process will move lightning fast in which case there will be little time to react. If that happens, it probably means the the bill is headed towards passage on its own. If problems are encountered, there should be sufficient time to mobilize and react.

If you're burnt out on letter writing, we don't blame you– this has been a long process and many of you have obviously devoted hours of your own time to the cause. If you've got any gas left in the tank, however, now is the time to get in your final words and ensure that all of Oregon's State Representatives know how strongly this bill is supported by the people of Oregon. And if you haven't sent in any letters yet, you'd better act fast. As I've said before, we should take nothing for granted in this process, and every letter counts.
