Hello SB 30 Supporters:

This morning (Sunday, June 10) the Oregonian printed an editorial expressing concerns about SB 30, essentially opposing the bill as written. The piece, entitled, "Yes, this river must be saved" asks whether or not Oregon can save the river without subverting its land use and water laws.

The answer is almost certainly no.

It's understandable that people would like our stat's land use system to save the Metolius. I would like that, and I'm sure you all would too. The problem is that the rules for destination resorts provide no protections in cases like this. The state's resort guidelines are poorly written, poorly devised, and work entirely at cross-purposes to the spirit of Oregon's land use system. If we're interesting in protecting the spirit of that system, then we must act to support SB 30.

Public support for SB 30 has been incredibly strong, and this editorial will not likely change that. But if we want to save the Metolius, it needs to be understood that SB 30 is almost certainly the only way to do that.

Please do not allow this editorial and the recent flyers sent by SB 30s opponents to work at the minds of our elected officials. We ask that you do two things:

Continue writing ALL the representatives, as you've been doing. Tell them SB 30 is the only sure way to protect the Metolius. Tell them why the Metolius is special to you. Tell them not to listen to those who would weaken the bill for their own personal gain.
Contact the Oregonian yourself and let them know of your support for SB 30. Keep your letters to 150 words or less and send them to letters@news.oregonian.com . Please include your your full address and daytime phone number, for verification. If you are going to do this, do it ASAP, because a vote on SB 30 could be days away. There is little time to waste. Remember– legislators read letters to the editor RELIGIOUSLY because they are interested in how YOU– their voting constituents– feel. Keep your messages short, on topic, and supportive of the bill.
