A fond farewell to Moey Newbold

Today, we say farewell to Moey Newbold, our Director of Urban Planning. After a decade of fierce advocacy work with Central Oregon LandWatch, Moey is stepping down from her position to embark on new adventures in Baltimore, Maryland. If you have had the pleasure of knowing Moey, you know that it is an understatement to say she made a lasting impact on our community.

If you look around Central Oregon and the city of Bend today, you’ll see evidence of Moey’s handiwork.

Early on in her tenure at LandWatch, Moey was pivotal in organizing the community around Bend’s New Urban Growth Boundary, resulting in successfully reducing sprawl by 70%. Moey’s work laid the foundation for sustainable and cost-effective growth that prioritized the redevelopment of opportunity areas within the city, rather than risking wildlife habitat and open space by sprawling outward.

Moey played a key role in the adoption of the Westside Transect Zone, a community-wide concept to limit wildfire risk to development on the western edge of Bend. Today, as Bend’s western edge continues to develop, it remains safeguarded from wildfire thanks in part to Moey’s championing of smart planning.

In 2017, Moey formed the BCD Initiative as a project of Landwatch to explore new models of urban revitalization in the heart of Bend. She recognized the need to bring people together for cross-sector collaboration and place-based advocacy to move the community’s vision for this area forward.

After years of hard work, outreach, engagement, and successful advocacy, the BCD Initiative is now a robust, grassroots group with widespread community support for the Bend Central District’s transformation into a vibrant, healthy, and inclusive mixed-use neighborhood, now guided by the volunteer Visionary Board.

We extend our gratitude and wish Moey the best of luck in her future endeavors. Our commitment to our Cities and Towns Program remains one that centers equitable and sustainable growth within our urban advocacy work across the region.
