Forest Management Operations in Skyline Forest

James Parsons

Recently, we’ve heard concern from the community about active forest management operations that are removing trees from Skyline Forest.

At least a part of this activity is the result of a state-funded initiative to address wildfire danger on more than 52,000 acres of public and private forestland in Central Oregon.

In 2021, the Oregon Department of Forestry awarded $20 million in grants (authorized by Senate Bill 762) to landscape-scale projects to reduce wildfire risk and increase resilience across the state. $6.25 million was awarded to the Central Oregon Shared Stewardship Landscape Resiliency Project, a collective of government agencies, nonprofits, and large landowners like Shanda Asset Management – which owns Skyline Forest. All forest management work under SB 762 must be completed by June 2023.

Skyline Forest is a privately owned timber property, and the landowners can conduct forest management and harvesting operations. If you have questions or concerns about the project, you can contact the Oregon Department of Forestry.
